Hercampuri from Peru (for Liver & Digestive Wellness)

Hercampuri, together with Vilcacora, has been used in traditional Peruvian folk medicine since ancient times. This Peruvian herb has two botanical names: Gentianella nitida (Griesbach) or Gentianella alborosea (Gilg.) Fabris, belonging to the Gentianaceae family.

It grows in the Peruvian Andes at altitudes between 3,500 and 3,900 metres above sea level. Hercampuri thrives in areas with very limited vegetation and a harsh mountain climate. In Peru, it is commonly known as Te amargo (“bitter tea”) or Te de Chavín (“Chavín tea”), referring to the Chavín region in the central Andes, known for its ancient pre-Columbian heritage.

The plant typically grows up to around 20 cm in height. It has a short, slightly twisted brown stem and narrow to lance-shaped leaves, ranging in colour from light brown to dark green.

    Chemical Composition

Hercampuri contains a rich variety of bioactive compounds, including terpenoids, flavonoids (including flavone glycosides and xanthone derivatives), xanthones, sterols, saponins, tannins, resins, volatile oils, gentianic acid, and a range of mineral salts.

These compounds are responsible for the plant’s characteristic bitterness, aroma, and traditional use in herbal preparations.

    Traditional Use & Herbal Properties

Due to its natural composition, Hercampuri has long been used in traditional herbal practices for its cleansing and balancing properties, particularly in relation to digestive and liver wellness.

It is traditionally valued in herbal routines supporting liver and gallbladder function, digestive comfort, and overall metabolic balance.

Hercampuri is also commonly used in traditional Amazonian and Andean herbal systems as part of natural wellness and cleansing practices.

    Traditional Preparation

Hercampuri is typically consumed as a decoction (herbal infusion). The dried herb is simmered gently in water and consumed throughout the day, usually between meals, as part of traditional herbal routines.
